You Bought a New Camera. Now Nothing Fits. Sound Familiar?

You finally upgraded your astrophotography camera. You're excited. You take it out. You try to attach it to your field flattener or filter wheel. And then — the threads don't match.

Your camera has an M42 thread. Your flattener has an M48 thread. Two different sizes. Completely stuck.

This is one of the most common and most annoying problems in astrophotography. And the fix costs almost nothing.

The ZWO M42-M48 Extender (16.5mm) is that fix. It connects M42 on one side and M48 on the other — and at exactly 16.5mm, it also sets your back focus distance correctly at the same time.

Two problems solved. One small adapter.

Two Problems This Extender Solves at Once

Most astrophotographers think this is just a thread converter. It does more than that.

Problem 1: Thread Mismatch. M42 and M48 are both popular thread standards in astrophotography. But they don't connect directly. You need an adapter in between. This extender has M42 male on one side and M48 male on the other. It bridges the gap cleanly.

Problem 2: Wrong Back Focus Distance. Every field flattener and focal reducer has a required back focus distance. This is the exact gap between the last optical element and your camera sensor. Many popular flatteners require exactly 55mm of back focus. When you measure your imaging train, you often end up short by about 16.5mm. This extender fills that gap precisely.

One product. Solves both at once. That's why ZWO made it this specific length.

What is Back Focus — Simply Explained

Imagine your telescope is a projector. It projects a sharp, flat image at a specific point in the air behind it. Your camera sensor needs to sit exactly at that point.

Too close? Stars at the corners of your image look stretched or oval. Too far? Same problem — just in a different direction. Only the exact distance gives you sharp, round stars from corner to corner.

The problem is — your filter wheel, your OAG, your camera nose piece — they all add thickness. When you stack everything together, the total is almost never the right number.

The ZWO M42-M48 Extender (16.5mm) adds exactly 16.5mm to your imaging train. No guessing. No cutting. No improvising with tape or random spacers.

One important note about the thread design — both sides are male. This means it doesn't screw directly into another male thread. It connects between a female M42 component and a female M48 component. Make sure your setup has the right receiving threads before ordering.

Where Does This Extender Sit in Your Imaging Train?

Your imaging train is a chain of components. Each one has a thread on each end. This extender fits right in the middle — wherever you have an M42-to-M48 gap.

A typical setup looks like this:

Telescope focuser → Field Flattener (M48 female output) → ZWO M42-M48 Extender → Filter Wheel (M42 female input) → Camera

Or like this:

Telescope focuser → Field Flattener (M48 female output) → ZWO M42-M48 Extender → Camera (M42 female nose)

The extender slides into the chain wherever the thread sizes change. It locks everything together rigidly — no flex, no tilt, no shifting during long imaging sessions.

If you're building a full deep sky imaging setup, browse the deep space imaging collection at Sky Deep — it has telescopes, cameras, and accessories all in one place.

Which Setups Commonly Need This Extender?

Not every setup needs this adapter. But these combinations almost always do:

ZWO ASI cameras with M42 nose + M48 field flatteners. Many popular refractor field flatteners output M48. ZWO cameras come with M42 noses. This extender connects them and sets the back focus at the same time.

Filter wheels with M42 connections + M48 focusers. If your filter wheel has M42 threads but your focuser or corrector outputs M48, this extender bridges that gap cleanly.

Setups where your total imaging train is exactly 16.5mm too short. You've calculated everything. Your back focus is off by 16.5mm. This extender is the exact answer.

You can explore all compatible ZWO cameras here and pair them correctly with this extender. For other spacing options, check the full camera accessories collection — Sky Deep stocks multiple spacer sizes.

M42 vs M48 — What's the Actual Difference?

Both are thread standards used in astrophotography. Both have a 0.75mm pitch. The only difference is the outer diameter.

M42 — 42mm outer diameter. Also called T2 thread. Most ZWO cameras use this as their standard nose thread.

M48 — 48mm outer diameter. A wider thread. Many field flatteners, focal reducers, and larger filter wheels use this. It allows more light to pass through without vignetting on large sensors.

When your setup crosses from one standard to the other, you need an adapter. The ZWO M42-M48 Extender (16.5mm) is that adapter — made precisely for this exact crossing point.

If you use narrowband filters in your setup, check the narrowband filters at Sky Deep. The ZWO Duo-Band Filter and the ZWO T2-T2 11mm Extender both pair well depending on your imaging train configuration.

Why Buy This From Sky Deep — Not From a Random Marketplace?

On Daraz or random Facebook sellers, you'll find cheap thread adapters. Some of them are not machined to exact tolerances. A spacer that is 0.5mm off ruins your back focus calculation. You'll spend hours troubleshooting — and never figure out why your corners look bad.

The ZWO M42-M48 Extender (16.5mm) is precision CNC-machined. The length is exact. The threads are clean. It fits tight and holds firm.

And when you buy from Sky Deep, you get more than just the product:

  1. Sky Deep is Pakistan's ONLY authorized ZWO dealer. This is official — not a marketing claim.
  2. You get genuine ZWO products — not copies or lookalikes
  3. You get free nationwide delivery — Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, wherever you are
  4. You get free gear consultation before buying — ask them about your exact imaging train
  5. You get proper after-sales support if anything goes wrong

Still Building Your Setup? Start Here

A great imaging train needs great components at every step. Here's what you likely need alongside this extender:

A sharp apochromatic refractor gives you flat, color-corrected images. Browse apo refractors at Sky Deep — these are purpose-built for deep sky imaging.

A cooled camera reduces noise dramatically in long exposures. Color cameras are here and monochrome cameras are here.

A stable equatorial mount tracks stars accurately during long exposures. Without tracking, no spacer in the world will fix your images. Equatorial mounts are here.

Questions People Always Ask About This Extender

Q1. Both sides of this extender are male — how does it actually connect?

This extender has M42 male on one side and M48 male on the other. It connects between two female-threaded components. One side screws into a female M48 thread (like a field flattener output). The other side screws into a female M42 thread (like a camera nose piece or filter wheel input). Make sure your components have female receiving threads before ordering.

Q2. Will 16.5mm be enough to fix my back focus — or do I need a different length?

This depends on your specific setup. Many popular field flatteners — especially for ZWO cameras — require exactly 55mm back focus, and 16.5mm is a common shortfall. But every setup is different. If you're not sure, contact Sky Deep with your telescope model, camera model, and flattener model. They'll calculate the exact spacer length you need.

Q3. Can I use this extender with non-ZWO cameras or accessories?

Yes. M42 and M48 are universal thread standards. This extender works with any brand that uses these thread sizes — not just ZWO. As long as the threads match, it will connect.

Q4. Does this extender affect image quality in any way?

No. There is no glass or optics inside this extender. It is a solid metal spacer. It does not change how light travels. Image quality depends on your telescope and camera — not this adapter. The only thing it changes is the physical spacing between your components.

Q5. What's the difference between this and the ZWO T2-T2 11mm Extender?

These two extenders solve similar problems but for different thread sizes and lengths. The ZWO T2-T2 11mm Extender connects two T2 (M42) components and adds 11mm. This M42-M48 Extender connects an M42 component to an M48 component and adds 16.5mm. Which one you need depends on your specific imaging train and thread sizes.
